ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING AT ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
The architectural engineering program at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) started in 1995.
Currently, the program has about fifty undergraduate students. The program is accredited by ABET and consists
of three specialty areas:
- building mechanical and electrical systems;
- construction engineering and management; and
- structural engineering.
The program requires 136 credit hours for graduation and emphasizes on preparing students to enter the
profession and/or to begin graduate studies. Among features of IIT's program is a multidisciplinary project-based learning
process through the Interprofessional (IPRO) courses. Small-sized classes at IIT's architectural engineering program
offer a unique opportunity to students to interact with other students - upperclassmen and graduate students - as well as with
professors, in enhancing their learning experience. IIT's architectural engineering graduates have been successful in obtaining
employment in various positions in architectural/engineering firms especially in the Chicago area. The program is housed in the
Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. The Department has twelve fulltime and nine adjunct faculty members.
In addition to its undergraduate programs, the Department also offers a full line of graduate studies including a master
program in architectural engineering. IIT is a private university located about four miles south of Chicago's downtown area.
IIT's main campus was designed by the renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In addition to its engineering programs,
IIT also offers programs in
sciences, computer science, psychology, design, business administration, management, law and architecture. More information about
