ARCHITECTUAL ENGINEERING AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The aim of the Architectural Engineering (ARE) curriculum at Kansas State University is to prepare students for entry-level positions in the consulting engineering field in one or more of the specialty areas of Mechanical, Electrical/Lighting, Plumbing/ Fire Protection, or Structural building systems design. The expectation is that the ARE graduate will have a thorough understanding of how buildings are designed and built as well as how engineered systems are integrated into buildings.

To accomplish this goal, the undergraduate program is a five-year (158-credit-hour) curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Essentially, the program involves approximately four years of engineering and one year of building architectural and construction related courses.

Because of the stated aim of the program, the staff is very profession-oriented. All the engineering faculty are licensed professional engineers, most have had considerable experience in a professional office, and many perform ongoing consulting work. Nearly all of the ARE graduates pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination to achieve Engineer In Training (EIT) status upon graduation. After completing their required entry level engineering experience, they then go on to become licensed professional engineers.

The demand for K-State Architectural Engineering graduates and interns is increasing each year and now far exceeds the available supply, with continued 100% employment opportunity available for graduates. Perhaps this is the reason for the continued growth of the the program.

GRADUATE PROGRAM

Kansas State also offers a graduate program in architectural engineering, requiring a minimum of 30 hours of graduate credit with a significant range of options in the specialty areas of Mechanical, Electrical/Lighting, Plumbing/Fire Protection, or Structural building systems design. Undergraduate work must be from an ABET-accredited engineering program and is subject to the approval of the department. The program is structured to permit the student, by diligent work, to complete the Master of Science (M.S.) requirement in one calendar year.

B.S./M.S. PROGRAM

A combination Bachelor of Science/Master of Science degree program in architectural engineering is also offered, which challenges top students with research experiences, faculty mentoring and advanced course work. This program allows accepted students to reduce their undergraduate program by 15 credit hours and replace them with 15 hours of graduate credit.
