Visit the New AEI Website

AEI is proud to announce the launching of our new website. The improved look and intuitive navigation options allow you to get the information you need – fast. The site provides essential information about the institute, its activities, architectural engineering education, and licensure. We plan to make further enhancements throughout the year, so look for announcements in future editions of The Team. We are particularly excited about AEI’s new online magazine which debuts in January. We will archive all of the past issues as well as categorize the articles by topic for quick reference. Only AEI members will have access to this indispensable resource.

AEI-Only Dues Reduced!

We want all AEI-only members to be able to choose the best options for their individual needs. That is why we reduced the AEI-only dues from $140 to $100 and provide you with the option to purchase the Journal of Architectural Engineering for the member price of $51. Membership in AEI now includes the new online quarterly magazine scheduled to come out in January that is accessible only to AEI members. Look for your renewal in December!

Standards Committee – CALL FOR MEMBERS

The Standards Committee for Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation of Buildings will continue to develop revisions to SEI/ASCE 11-99, Standard Guideline for Structural Condition Assessment of the Building Envelope and SEI/ASCE 30-00, Guideline for Condition Assessment of the Building Envelope. The committee is seeking code and regulatory officials for committee balance. For more information, call Carl Baumert at 215-625-0099.

New! On-line Proceedings

The new ASCE Online Proceedings is an interactive, full-text database of more than 5,400 papers from the top civil engineering conferences. The new database will offer practitioners and researchers fast, convenient access to ASCE conference proceedings. It is an opportunity to access in-depth coverage of emerging technologies and innovative procedures across all disciplines of the civil engineering profession.

AEI members can save 33 percent on an ASCE Online Proceedings Library Card when they take advantage of a special $50 introductory rate. Visit www.ascelibrary.org for more information.

The Engineers Forum on Sustainability

The Engineers Forum on Sustainability is a resource produced collectively by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE). It contains an extensive list of articles about new developments in sustainable research and design and are grouped into five categories – government, academia, international, professional organizations, and other organizations and developments. The latest issue includes an update on the EPA Energy Star Program and a summary of the Draft Federal Guide for Green Construction Specs.

LEED-NC Certification Exam Established

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently established a professional accreditation Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) exam based on LEED-NC Version 2.1. The purpose of the exam is to test the applicants understanding of green building practices and principles, and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources, and processes. Successful candidates will receive a LEED Accredited Professional Certificate, one point toward LEED Certification of their green building projects and recognition as a LEED Accredited Professional on the USGBC website.

University of Miami Students Working on Sustainable Housing Design for Hot and Humid Climates

A group of Architectural Engineering students at the University of Miami have been selected to U.S. EPA's 2004 nationwide student design competition focusing on the three components of sustainability: people, prosperity and the planet (P3). In this project, the design team will work with multi-disciplinary faculty advisors to design a "model" house to ensure occupant's health, sustainability and reduction of the impact of building materials and the building itself on local and global environments.

Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE) at The Pennsylvania State University

At Penn State, we try our best to distribute our efforts uniformly between serving our major and profession, serving our community, and promoting friendship and fun beyond the classroom. Our recent activities include making a presentation for our Colle ge of Engineering’s Major Night, hosting an AE Career Fair resume/interviewing skills workshop, raising money for the Four Diamonds Fund to aid the fight against childhood cancer by taking a canning road trip, hosting a broomball game versus a chapter of the Alpha Rho Chi professional Architecture fraternity, and hosting AE Tailgate parties.

Fellowship Opportunity
The National Academies' Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program is now accepting applications from graduate and postdoctoral students for its winter, summer and fall 2005 sessions.

The program is designed to engage science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business and law students in the analysis and creation of public policy and to familiarize them with the interactions of science, technology and government. The application deadline for the summer session is Tuesday, March 1.
