New AEI Board Members

Congratulations to Mohammed M. Ettouney, Ph.D., P.E., for being elected as President-Elect of the Architectural Engineering Institute and to Ernest W. Parti, Ph.D., P.E., and Richard F. Rowe, S.E., P.E., AIA, for being elected to the 2004-2005 AEI Board of Governors. The new AEI board members will begin their term this coming October.

The Architectural Engineering P.E. Exam Update

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) offered the Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination – Architectural for the second year in a row in April. During each of the past two years approximately 80 candidates have taken the exam. Based on the responses submitted to the exam development subcommittee, the exam has been well received.

If you would like to help write, review or pretest problems on the A.E. P.E. Exam, please contact me, Mark McAfee, P.E., at mmcafee@dwase.com or 316-263-7591. Your involvement in the P.E. Exam Development Subcommittee is an excellent opportunity to support and promote the architectural engineering profession as well as to earn Professional Development Hours.

New AEI Administrative Committee on Guidelines and Standards

The Architectural Engineering Institute Board of Governors has approved the creation of an administrative committee on guidelines and standards. Paul Seaburg, Ph.D., P.E., Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, has agreed to chair the committee. For many years, Dr. Seaburg was the head of the Department of Architectural Engineering at Penn State University. He has served on the Executive Committee of the ASCE Structural Division and the first Executive Committee of the Architectural Engineering Division (AED) and was instrumental in establishing AEI. Dr. Seaburg is currently assembling his committee and already has several standards to consider. Please join the AEI Board in thanking Dr. Seaburg for undertake this important assignment.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Developments

The LEED Green Building Rating System has remained current through continual updates and new developments that increase the scope of the rating system. Currently, LEED is developing a Commercial Interiors Rating System (LEED-CI) which is scheduled to be out later this year as well as a more comprehensive version of LEED, scheduled to be out in 2005. LEED is a feature-oriented rating system where credits are earned for satisfying specified green building criteria. The five major environmental categories of review include: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.

The Architectural Engineering Institute is co-sponsoring the National Park Service's summer institute which will offer four courses about the preservation of historic buildings and landscapes including: Materials and Older Buildings (July 13-14), Building Pathology (July 16-17), Investigations & Diagnostics Methodology (July 19-20), and Treatment Strategies & Interventions (July 22-23). Registration is open until course is full. Let the National Park Service know that you are an AEI member and receive $100 off your registration! AEI will offer PDHs for this course.

GSA Launches Free Online Project Planner

Project Planning Tools (PPT), Version 1.0, enables efficient planning, management and delivery of building projects and increases delivery team productivity while improving project quality. The PPT is offered by the U.S. General Services Administration's Public Buildings Service in order to assist in delivering quality projects on time and within budget. The GSA is making this Web site temporarily available for unrestricted use by the general public in order to determine levels of interest and to obtain feedback on ways it might be modified to better suit both public and private sectors. Homeland Security for Buildings: ASHRAE Satellite Broadcast DVD

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) presented a live satellite broadcast in April on homeland security for buildings. This two-hour program addresses questions of design, construction and operation of buildings. It covers key issues related to building protection and draws heavily from ASHRAE's most credible and timely reports and publications. Broadcast across the United States to over 20,000 viewers, the program features bioterrorism security experts and is ideal for a cross-section of professionals including engineers, architects, building owners and managers, fire fighters, police, medical responders, public safety officers, risk managers and other key personnel.

A copy of the broadcast is now available to purchase on DVD through the ASHRAE Bookstore.

New Green Building Practices Web Site Launched

The U.S. Green Building Council and the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation have launched GreenerBuildings.com, a free, content-rich, Web site that provides companies with information and resources on the spectrum of environmental issues related to building facilities. At GreenerBuildings.com you can find information on a range of topics including architecture and design, building materials, energy use, facilities management, interiors, land use, waste management and water use.
