2012 AEI Student Conference
Career Fair

NebEngReg-RGB-sm

The University of Nebraska AE program has been selected to host the 2012 National Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) Student Conference April 19-21, 2012. We are planning for 250 students representing nearly every ABET accredited Architectural Engineering program, including many of architectural engineering’s top students in all disciplines participating in the Charles Pankow AEI Student Design Competition. Associated with the conference the students are hosting a Career-Fair that will provide excellent exposure for you and your company with these top Architectural Engineering students.

The AEI Student Conference is being held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha's south campus. We are extremely proud of the leadership that the AE Student Leadership and Advisory Committee (AESLAC), led by Chris Beaty, Karina Kelly, and Kevin Harders, the Conference Coordinators, has shown in the organization and development of this conference. They have put together an excellent program. For more information on the conference see: http://engineering.unl.edu/durhamschool/events/AEIconference/index.shtml

AEI is very excited about the growth and involvement in the AEI Student Competition. The first offering of the student competition was in 2009 in Kansas City. The second offering in Oakland saw very significant growth. Most of the Architectural Engineering programs participated last year and we are anticipating continued significant growth this year. For more information on the competition see: http://content.asce.org/studentcompetition/competition.html

The AEI Student Conference Career-Fair will be held on Saturday morning April 21st (9:30 to 12:30). Registration for the career-fair includes the closing banquet and awards ceremony lunch. For additional information and to register go to: http://engineering.unl.edu/durhamschool/events/AEIconference/career-fair.shtml

This will be a great mutually beneficial opportunity for both students and employers and is a tradition that we are building into all of the AEI conferences. We look forward to your participation.

If you have any questions please contact Clarence Waters (cwaters@unl.edu) or Cassandra Yates (cyates2@unl.edu).

As always, thank you for all that you do for our building industry.  durhamlogo-RGB-sm

FEMA Webinar
Reducing the Risks of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage
A Practical Guide, Fourth Edition (FEMA E-74)

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
https://fema.connectsolutions.com/nehrp-webinar/

Course Description
Nonstructural components of buildings include all elements that are not part of the structural system; that is, the architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as furniture, fixtures, equipment, and other contents. During the recent earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand, Japan, Virginia and other earlier earthquakes in California, Washington, and other parts of the U.S., nonstructural failures have accounted for the majority of damage and injuries. In many cases, businesses, schools, hospitals, and other organizations had to spend excessive time and dollars for clean up and repair due to nonstructural failures; therefore impeding continued operations and rapid recovery. Moreover, nonstructural component failures also impeded safe evacuation, delayed rescue, and caused additional hazards such as fire resulting in serious life safety issues.

This FEMA-sponsored 1½ hour webinar describes the sources and types of nonstructural earthquake damage and the effective methods and guidance that individuals and organizations can use to take action now before the next earthquake and minimize future injuries and property losses from nonstructural risks.

Target Audience
Building owners, facility managers, local officials, engineers, architects, small businesses, and emergency managers in the Pacific Northwest.

The purpose of this workshop is to illustrate how to apply emerging high performance concepts to enhance building security. The learning objectives include discussing high building performance attributes such as safety, security, durability, energy conservation, sustainability and environmental concerns. Also, the workshop will argue that optimizing these attributes can be achieved using risk, resiliency, multihazards interactions, life cycle analysis, and system integration (multidisciplinary streamlining) as performance measures. The workshop will explore these topics as they relate to building security enhancements. The results would benefit all building stakeholders, including engineers, architects, owners, facility managers and security professionals.
