A New Methodology for Peatland Carbon Credits 

Applied Ecological Institute Opens Public Comment Period for the Pocosin Peat Bog Restoration & Protection Protocol, Version 1.0

Carbon registries and technical experts invited to submit feedback before the protocol advances toward registry submission 

08/12/2026 - Brodhead, WI-Applied Ecological Institute today announced that the Pocosin Peat Bog Restoration & Protection Protocol, Version 1.0, a carbon accounting and crediting methodology developed to quantify carbon credits from peatland conservation and restoration projects, is now open for public comment. 

Peatlands store more carbon per unit area than almost any other ecosystem on Earth, yet remain among the most degraded and under-financed landscapes in the global carbon market. The Pocosin Peat Bog Restoration & Protection Protocol, Version 1.0 was built to give project developers and buyers a rigorous, transparent standard for quantifying the climate benefit of protecting and restoring these ecosystems. 

The draft protocol has already been shaped by an initial round of review from independent reviewers spanning peatland science, carbon accounting methodology, and affected community representatives. Applied Ecological Institute is now opening that review to the wider carbon marketplace — inviting trading platforms, methodology experts, and other stakeholders to submit comments through September 12, 2026. 

Feedback received during the comment period will inform revisions ahead of the protocol's submission for formal registry review.  

Applied Ecological Institute encourages anyone with an interest in nature-based and wetland carbon credits to review the draft protocol and share feedback before the comment period closes.
