Assessing the durability of soil organic carbon under various environmental stressors.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a crucial role in maintaining soil health, fertility, and ecosystem services. However, SOC is subject to various environmental stressors that can affect its durability and stability. This white paper examines the impacts of soil dewatering, tillage, wetting and saturation, agricultural fertilizers, soil heating, drought, wildfire, soil desiccation, and overgrazing on SOC durability. By reviewing current literature and presenting key findings, this paper aims to provide insights into the complex interactions between these stressors and SOC, as well as potential management strategies to enhance SOC durability.
